Israel is building a new settlement in the occupied West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron), Press TV reports.
According to residents and rights groups, Tel Aviv has already begun leveling land and setting up mobile homes in the city.
Saleh al-Khawajeh, an activist from the West Bank city of al-Khalil told Press TV that the Palestinian families living in the city suffer from extreme violence by the Israeli army and settlers. He added that the families have to endure the humiliation of entering their homes through an Israeli checkpoint where they are often searched and questioned.
Al-Khawajeh described the move by the Israeli regime as “one of the most extreme and dangerous polices,” saying, “They (the Israelis) have started bringing in mobile homes and barracks to the center of al-Khalil , an area which is populated by thousands of people. These people suffer on a daily basis by the Israeli settlers who attack the residents.”
The presence and continued expansion of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine has created a major obstacle for the efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.
More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.
The United Nations and most countries regard the Israeli settlements as illegal because the territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967 and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.[Full story]
